Learning in Infants
Mornings have a strong focus on teaching English and Mathematics. We follow the ‘Read Write Inc’ literacy programme in Key Stage 1, spending time on phonics, weekly spellings, grammar and writing skills. In addition children have individual reading as well as group reading to enable them to develop their ability to read for meaning. We use the Collins mathematics scheme as a framework for our Maths teaching, which we supplement with weekly times tables challenges, mental maths and problem solving.
The curriculum allows the pupils to develop their thinking skills and abilities across a broad range of subjects and topics including Science, History, Geography, French, ICT, Art, Drama, Music, RE, Personal and Social Education, and Physical Education.
Each term parents are provided with a curriculum overview outlining what the focus for the term will be, including the topics being covered and homework routines.
Academic Subjects for Infants
Learning is exciting and challenging through the rich and varied curriculum. Pupils study a full curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, French, ICT, Art, DT, Drama, Music, PE and Games. We aim to challenge our pupils to think for themselves and to participate readily in the classroom. We encourage pupils to talk about their learning and to understand how to make the next steps in their progress.
Pupils discuss their ideas, work individually and also in pairs or groups. They have an extended independent writing task every week to encourage written articulacy and expression.
The weekly ‘Times Table Challenge’ is a regular feature in assemblies, with points awarded to each class.
