The RSPB Big Birdwatch
Our pupils recently took part in the RSPB Big Birdwatch, supporting this important charity while enjoying some fantastic outdoor learning.
Children in EYFS headed to the forest, while pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 on the School Council and Eco Council completed their birdwatch in the playground and outside the front of the school. Pupils in Years 1–6 thoroughly enjoyed searching for different birds and trying to recognise those flying past. They carefully studied the identification sheets and were very excited to spot a bird that was not listed, a collared dove! Despite the cold weather, everyone had a brilliant time supporting the RSPB, and Miss Stone and Mrs Bloomfield are extremely proud of them.
In EYFS, pupils counted a wide variety of birds, including 11 magpies, 15 crows, 5 blackbirds, and even a flock of seagulls – too many to count, but they had a go at estimating! They listened carefully to different bird sounds and waited patiently for the robin, who often sings to them, to make an appearance. The children also placed bird seed around the flag area to encourage birds to visit, although the noise nearby meant the birds were a little shy. The learning continued through fun activities, including making their bodies into a hawk by holding a balancing yoga pose on one leg. They played a “still and silent” game where Mrs Fletcher was a kestrel and the pupils were mice, when camouflage was called, everyone had to freeze or be ‘eaten’! Finally, the pupils carefully followed instructions to make their own flying birds, ensuring they didn’t break them before flying them through the air.
It was a really lovely day, filled with learning, teamwork and enthusiasm, all while supporting the RSPB.
