Year 3 & 4 Clay Sculptures

This term, Year 3 and 4 have immersed themselves in the exciting world of sculpture. Our focus has been on Sculpture. The children had the opportunity to experience a new medium and explore how three-dimensional art is created. To tie in with the festive season, the children were tasked with designing and making their own Christmas ornaments.

The project began with detailed design work. The children sketched out their ideas, considering shape, texture and the overall effect they wanted to achieve. They discussed which features would translate well into clay and how they could make their ornaments both decorative and sturdy. Once the planning stage was complete, the real hands-on fun began. Using a variety of clay tools, as well as their fingers, the children shaped, carved and patterned the clay to bring their designs to life. They explored different techniques such as smoothing, scoring, pinching and pressing to add character and detail to their creations. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they experimented and refined their ideas. After the ornaments had fully dried, the children moved on to painting, carefully choosing colours that complemented their designs. A final layer of glaze added a glossy finish, making each piece shine and giving it a polished, professional look. The end results were truly impressive and their teachers were very proud of the finished work. The Year 3 and 4 children were then able to take their finished sculptures home to share with their families.
