Year 4 States of Matter Science Topic
This week, Year 4 pupils took part in an exciting Science Investigation as part of their topic on ‘States Of Matter’. The pupils were learning about the melting points of solids and put this into a real-life context by examining whether different types of chocolate, white, milk, or dark, melt at different speeds. To ensure their investigation was valid and replicable, the pupils applied excellent scientific practice by using a range of control measures. They carefully used a thermometer to check the temperature of the water, measured the same amount of chocolate in each bowl, and used a timer to accurately record how long each type took to melt.
While waiting for their results, the pupils carried out a mini-investigation of their own, ‘Does chocolate melt faster in your hand or on your tongue?’. Surprisingly, they discovered that chocolate melts quicker on the tongue than in the hand. They discussed how body temperature and the addition of saliva made a difference to the rate of melting! The pupils demonstrated fantastic scientific thinking and teamwork throughout the lesson and thoroughly enjoyed both investigations.
