Remembrance Assembly
The EYFS and Junior pupils came together for a special Remembrance Day Assembly, led by Mrs Bloomfield and some of the Year 6 Prefects. It was a time to pause, reflect, and give thanks for the courage and sacrifice of those who have served, and continue to serve, in times of war and peace. Mrs Bloomfield and the Year 6 Prefects explained that the Armistice was signed on November 11th, 1918, marking the end of fighting in the First World War. Since then, every year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, people around the world stop for a moment of silence to remember those who gave their lives so that we could live in peace and freedom.
We also learnt about the symbol of the poppy, which first grew on the battlefields of Flanders after the war ended and heard the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae.
The Year 6 Prefects also shared the meanings behind the different coloured poppies we see today:
- Red poppy – remembers all those who have died in conflict.
- Black poppy – remembers the contributions of Black, African, and Caribbean communities in the war efforts.
- White poppy – represents peace and a commitment to work towards ending all wars.
- Purple poppy – honours the animals who served and suffered during wars.
Thank you to the Prefects and Mrs Bloomfield for a wonderful and reflective assembly.
