Early Years 'The Gruffalo' Week

The Early Years children have been busy eating Gruffalo crumble, making owl ice cream and making playdough Gruffalo’s! The children have loved reading the story and doing lots of fun activities in the theme of the Gruffalo.

A question in drawing club was ‘what if the Gruffalo was afraid of something even scarier than the mouse? We had some fantastic drawings and answers:

  • “T-Rex is bigger than the Gruffalo. The Gruffalo is scared of the T-Rex. T-Rex is going to eat the Gruffalo” – Jude
  • “The Lion jumps on the Gruffalo. The lion roars to the Gruffalo. The lion is angry.” – Penelope
  • “The dinosaur frightened the Gruffalo. He’s got sharp teeth and sharp claws.” – Imaan
  • “The Gruffalo was scared of the witch because she has a magic potion in her hands.” - Ayla

For their Friday Forest School, all of Early Years went for a walk in the sun to Chingford plains. The children enjoyed playing the game 1,2,3, where are you, a bit like hide and seek but the children know they have to stay inside the flag area to keep safe.

Everyone acted out the Gruffalo story using the words from the book. They thought about the characters in the story and listened to the instructions on how to make a mouse using a pine cone. While half the children made a mouse the other half made a mouse house using twigs and leaves.

Whilst the children were busy and engrossed in the activity the long-horned cows had crept up to near where the class were busy. Early Years watched them and they watched the children too!

When it was time to go home, the clouds gathered and became darker and then the rain came tumbling down. The children sang ‘We hear thunder’ as they trundled at a fast pace back to school, just a little wet but having had a really fun time!
