Years 3 & 4 create Anglo Saxon Shields

Over the past few weeks, Year 3 and 4 have been working hard on an exciting long-term Art Project inspired by Anglo-Saxon Shields. The pupils began by learning about the importance of shields in Anglo-Saxon times, exploring their historical meanings, designs, colours, and patterns. They discovered how shields were used not only for protection in battle but also to represent identity and status. They then designed their own unique shields, carefully thinking about colour choices, symbols, and traditional patterns. They evaluated and improved their ideas before transferring their final designs onto cardboard shield cut-outs, ensuring they left space for the shield boss in the centre.

Once their designs were complete, the pupils painted their shields and some pupils added silver detailing around the edges to give their shields a more authentic and decorative finish. To complete the project, the children attached handles to the back of their shields and coated them with PVA glue, creating a shiny appearance while also making them extra strong and durable. The finished shields look fantastic, and the pupils invited Mrs Job to come and have a look at their finished product. She was very proud of each and every one of them, as were Miss Varley, Miss Stone and Mr Masters. Well done Year 3 and 4!
