Year 3-6 visit the Royal Gunpowder Mills

To kick off our STEAM Week, pupils from Years 3–6 enjoyed an exciting and inspiring visit to the historic Royal Gunpowder Mills. The pupils loved exploring this fascinating site and celebrating this year’s STEAM theme of ‘Curiosity’.

One of the highlights of the visit was a ride on The Gunpowder Railway, a narrow-gauge railway that runs for around one kilometre along the perimeter of the site. As the train travelled through the grounds, pupils enjoyed beautiful views of the surrounding alder plantation and were thrilled to spot some of the wild deer that live within the nature reserve.

The pupils also took part in a rocket-building workshop. Working like real scientists and engineers, they designed and built their own air-powered rockets before launching them into the air. The children investigated how to make their rockets travel further by devising fair tests, gathering data, and reporting their findings. It was fantastic to see their curiosity in action and celebrating each other’s successes.

Everyone had a brilliant day and thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to STEAM Week. One of our pupils even said ‘this is best trip I have ever been on!’.
