Art & Design
Infants
We have a broad and vibrant Art and Design curriculum across all key stages.
The purpose of Art and Design at Normanhurst School is to stimulate creativity and imagination. It provides a visual, tactile and sensory experience, and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. Through Art and Design our pupils are able to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.
By the end of Early Years children develop;
- Self-expression
- Opportunities to explore different media
- Mark making
- Collaboration
- Play and exploratory learning
- An appreciation of artists’ work
By the end of the Infants, in addition to all of the above pupils will have developed;
- Fine motor skills
- Imagination
- Drawing and mark making
- Design and planning skills
- Colour theory
- An ability to mix colours
- An extension of learning through cross curricular links
Art and Design activities include drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, 3D, ICT, model making and cooking. Development is measured by observing pupils, giving verbal feedback, questioning and written feedback.
Juniors
We have a broad and vibrant Art and Design curriculum across all key stages. The purpose of Art and Design at Normanhurst School is to stimulate creativity and imagination.
It provides a visual, tactile and sensory experience, and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. Through Art and Design our pupils are able to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.
By the end of the Juniors pupils will have developed;
- An understanding and appreciation of artists and craftspeople
- Ability to develop a design idea into a product
- An understanding of proportion, scale and composition
- An ability to record first hand observations
- An increased confidence in using visual and tactile elements
In Years 3 to 11 pupils’ development is measured through National Curriculum levels, verbal feedback, questioning and written feedback.
In addition to our creative curriculum we celebrate Art and Design through the many displays around the school, entering Art and Design competitions, exhibiting pupils’ work in galleries and organising visits to see exhibitions and Industry Design practice.
From KS2 to KS4 activities also include textiles, graphic design, photography, and animation.
Seniors

It provides a visual, tactile and sensory experience, and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. Through Art and Design our pupils are able to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.
Pupils will have developed the following skills by the end of the curriculum in Year 9 or GCSEs in Year 11:
- An ability to use a range of techniques to record their observations in sketchbooks and journals.
- An ability to use other media as a basis for developing and exploring their ideas.
- An ability to use a range of techniques and media, including painting.
- An ability to increase their proficiency in the handling of different materials.
- An ability to analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others.
- An appreciation of the visual impact or applications of their work.
- Knowledge of the history of art, craft, design and architecture, including periods and styles.
- Understanding of the major movements from ancient times up to the present day.
