The Mega Magic Hair Swap

The Early Years children enjoyed an afternoon all about hair yesterday. World Afro Hair Day is held on September 15, and celebrates the natural hair of people from black and mixed-race ethnicities.

We began by reading the story ‘The Mega Magic Hair Swap’ which is all about two little girls who love each other’s hair and decide to swap. It’s a magical story about curls and being yourself. During the afternoon the children enjoyed role-play at the hairdressers. They had a go at plaiting and braiding, washing the doll’s hair and even had fun styling their teacher’s hair. The worksheet encouraged the children to draw their favourite hairstyle and here are some quotes from the Reception children describing the hair they designed:

“My hair is straight and blonde and long”- Lilia.

“My hair is so straight because it has super powers in it.”- Leo

“My hair is rainbow”- Henry
