Normanhurst pupils have been awarded ‘Joint First’ for their class books based on Shakespeare Plays. Our Year 1 to Year 6 classes participated in this event this year during our annual Shakespeare Week. We will receive a Shakespeare workshop in school as our award.
At Normanhurst School, we have been taking part in the Shakespeare Week competition since the 2020-21 academic year. Once we realised how engaged all of our pupils were with Shakespeare plays, we amended our English curriculum to accommodate a different Shakespeare play to be studied from Year 1 all the way to Year 6.
This annual competition gets our pupils very excited and stimulates their critical thinking because it enables us to approach various lines in plays in new ways. In our first year, we received a ‘Highly Commended’ title for one of our entries. In our second year, we received a ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘First Runner Up’ titles. This year we were JOINT FIRST in the ‘whole school’ category for our class books based on Shakespeare plays.
Over the last three years, Our favourite challenge was the famous quote from The Tempest: ‘A turn or two I’ll walk, To still my beating mind.’ However, we also particularly loved this year’s challenge as our pupils decided to harmoniously combine their artwork with their writing.
After celebrating our success this year, we will be looking forward to taking part in next year’s competition!
