Gumboot Dance Workshop

During the month of October, as part of our Black History Month celebrations, all of the Junior students had a fantastic opportunity to learn about the history of South African Gumboot Dancing.

They were amazed to discover that the dancing in gumboots originates from the South African mines, where the miners expressed themselves through dance wearing their gumboots. The miners would create rhythms by slapping their boots, hats and bodies, as well as using their voices and stamping.

The children had a brilliant time learning a few different Gumboot Dance routines, and then also had the chance to freestyle to a wonderful African drumming rhythm.
