As part of Science Week, Year 6 visited Waltham Abbey Gardens to learn all about habitats of pond life and woodland creatures.
They started the day with learning in one of the classrooms at the centre and then they had the opportunity to explore the local area. After playing a game about the things needed for survival, the pupils were able to go pond dipping. In small groups, they each had a net, tray and magnifying tubs to look at the creatures they carefully collected. The pupils spent time analysing the details of each creature to try and identify what they had found. They found leaches, freshwater shrimp, water snails, blood worms, water louse and many more.
After a quick lunch break, they ventured out into the woods to find even more wildlife, they found that many link to the pond life creatures including snails and wood louse. In addition they found many spiders, insects and a leopard slug but the best one was a tiny toad! They continued their search on the branches of trees and found more creatures that could fly. The Year 6 pupils had a wonderful day exploring their local area and finding all of these tiny members of our community!
