Year 1 Black History Month Activities

Year 1 were all very enthusiastic and engaged with their learning during Black History Month in October. In a special assembly, they enjoyed watching clips of, and recognising, black athletes competing. In class, pupils found the story of Sarah Boone, who invented the improved ironing board, fascinating and completed biographies packed with interesting details. A class highlight was then making collages to design ironing boards, which showed much creative flair! Year 1 also debated the key issues in the case of Rosa Parks and decided that she was an extremely brave women who stood up for her beliefs and the plan she devised in prison brought about significant change. The class completed a Rosa Parks timeline which helped everyone to remember all the key events.

Below are a selection of the children’s own words to sum up what they had learnt and remembered:

Poyraz – Rosa Parks changed the law because she said it wasn’t fair that the black people go to a different school than white people and on the same bus.

Elin and Georgia – Rosa Parks changed the law.

Isabel – Black History Month is important because black people and white people are important.

Grace – Sarah Boone invented an improved ironing board.

Stella – I learned about Sarah Boone that she had 8 kids.

Lucia – That Sarah Boone’s mummy and daddy were slaves.

Victor – Sarah Boone had a patent.

Shalini – Sarah Boone was the first black lady to get a patent.

Elise – Usain Bolt was a black runner.

Maya – Sarah Boone got married and that’s why she wasn’t a slave.

Stephanie – Sarah Boone got married to James Boone.

Kenan – Rosa Parks changed the law and for the black people and herself to be free.

Charlie – Rosa Parks got a medal.

Clementine – Rosa Parks said no to the bus driver when he asked her to stand up.

Great work Year 1, well done!
