Museum of London Trip

Year 8 enjoyed an interactive and informative trip to the Fire of London exhibition at the Museum of London as part of their studies on Stuart England.

The Story of the Great Fire of London in 245 Objects marks 350 years since the famous conflagration in 1666. We saw many of those objects as we walked round, including brackets, a bible with its pages burnt and an unfinished embroidery. Other artefacts included a fire engine from 1678 and a helmet donned by Isabel during our object handling session.

The final stage of the exhibition involved students using bricks to rebuild London after the fire, which was particularly enjoyed by Joe and Sarah.  Beth was fascinated by a document indicating that people had to pay the King two Shillings a year for each hearth they owned, called a Hearth Tax. Our taught session on object handling involved students sitting at tables in groups and working out what they were handling.

It was a successful trip which brought the Fire of London alive in a highly engaging way.
